where Google announces new hardware and software updates of its existing apps and services. Below are some of the biggest announcements from conference.
Changes in Android P’s navigation system:
Initially Google released the developer preview of Android P, now they released the beta version of Android P along with some features. Earlier, Google introduced three button navigation system for Android: Home, Back, and Recents. Now with Android P, these are eliminated in favor of a gesture-based system.
The latest gesture based system work as follows:
- Tap Home button.
- Swipe up to access the recent apps page
- Swipe up twice or do a long swipe for the app drawer
- The Back button only appears in certain menu when it’s needed
Google always find ways to maximize phone’s battery life. The new “Adaptive battery” mode in Android P helps to extend mobile’s battery life. It is noted that Adaptive battery can lower CPU usage by 30%.
Do not disturb feature:
The new do not disturb tool called “Shush” which enables you to block visual notifications, that automatically activates whenever phone is placed screen down on the table or desk. However, you will still be able to receive important calls.
App actions and slices:
Basically, App Action is a specific task within an app that you commonly perform. For example: If you are booking a flight, you might see a shortcut that allows your booking to be done through Paytm.
Slices are the interactive snippets which can appear in Google Search. For example, if you are looking for a Hotel to book a table, a slice from Hotel app will allow you to book it for which you don’t have to particularly visit that app.
Changes in the Google Assistant:
We already know about the popularity of that Google assistant gained with “Continued Conversation”. Now instead of saying “Hey Google” or “Ok Google” every single time. The updated new feature allows you to ask multiple questions within the same request.
Smart compose feature in Gmail:
If you are tired of typing the monotonous emails every day, then Google has offering “Smart Compose” feature in Gmail. With this feature, Gmail will suggest you words and phrases related to your topic. For example: if you are typing a simple email, it will suggest you phrases related to your topic. The words will be based on Google’s own suggestion.
Advancements in Google Maps:
For You, New feature in Google map lets you know specific neighborhoods of new restaurants and business that are trending among other users. You can even coordinate with friends in real time to make a “shortlist” when choosing a place to eat at.
The following are the other highlights which were worth mentioning:
- Changes in Google Lens will let you copy and paste text from the real world in a new update.
- Waymo is launching self-driving car program for all folks in Phoenix, no driver will be behind the wheel. The launch is expected later this year.
- Google News and Google Play are getting major redesign, where Google Pay now supports online ticketing and boarding pass information.
- Google introduces the new Machine Learning Kit, which offers several features such as image labeling, facial recognition, etc.
